The gap in the trade
Nobody teaches heating engineers the wiring. Here is where it was supposed to happen.
In short
Gas courses teach gas. Plumbing courses teach water. Many colleges do not teach controls wiring at all, and the trade schools that do sell it as one day for £300 or more, with barely any hands-on time and nothing to practise on afterwards. Most of a day’s learning is gone within days. So plumbing and heating engineers go to work having never wired the thing that causes most of their call-backs. DrawWarm is the practice that never existed: from £29 a month, as often as you like, until it is automatic.
What each route teaches about controls wiring
| Route | What it teaches | The wiring | Cost | Afterwards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gas courses and ACS | Gas safety, the regulations, combustion, the assessments you need to be Gas Safe registered. | None. Being Gas Safe registered does not involve wiring a heating system. | Course and assessment fees | Nothing to practise on; the wiring is met on site. |
| Plumbing and heating diplomas | Water, pipework, fittings, the regulations, some system types on paper. | Little or none. Many colleges do not teach controls wiring at all; where they do, it is a diagram and a rig shared by the class. | Course fees | The rig belongs to the college; there is no practice at home. |
| A one-day wiring course | S-Plan and Y-Plan on a training board, demonstrated, sometimes wired once by each learner. | Yes, for a day. Often £300 or more, with little hands-on time per person. | Often £300 or more for the day | Nothing. Without practice most of a day’s learning fades within days, and there is no board to go back to. |
| Free videos | Explanations of wiring and faults, on camera, including the DrawWarm founder’s own channel. | Watching, not doing. No way to be wrong and find out. | Free | Rewatch it. The hands still have not done it. |
| DrawWarm | 7 courses and 45 lessons that check every connection you make; 23 call-outs with a meter. | Every day, as often as you like: wire it, switch it on, meter it, break it, fix it, until the wiring centre is automatic. | Sandbox £29 a month (the simulator only). Full version £199 a month; £99 at launch until 31 March 2027. No VAT added. | The whole point. It is the practice, and it is there on Tuesday when the fault is in front of you. |
The courses are not the problem: gas courses should be about gas, and a day on a board is better than no day. The problem is that nobody owns the wiring, and a skill you do once does not stay.
Why a day does not stick
- One board, twelve learners: most of the day is watching someone else wire it.
- You do the S-Plan once. Once is enough to recognise it and not enough to do it under pressure with a customer stood behind you.
- The board stays at the training centre. On Tuesday, with a cold cylinder and a live wiring centre, there is nothing to go back to.
- Without practice, most of what is learned in a day fades within days. That is not a criticism of the course; it is how memory works.
What practising until it is automatic looks like
- Wire an S-Plan from a bare wiring centre. Then a Y-Plan. Then the combi with the wireless stat. 45 lessons check every connection as you make it.
- Break it on purpose: the stat on the satisfied terminal, the switched live on the permanent live, the blown 3 A fuse. 23 call-outs, chosen at random, with a meter and a clock.
- Do it at 11 pm with nobody watching, get it wrong, and see exactly why. Then do it again tomorrow.
- From £29 a month for the simulator on its own, £199 for every course and call-out. Cancel any time.
The short version A day course shows you. Videos explain to you. DrawWarm makes you do it, checks it, and is still there next week. Practise until you are the one the others ring.
