Foundation · Unit 8
Jobs
In short
Jobs at Foundation level on the wired S-Plan: replace a faulty 2-port valve (prove the motor first), fit a frost thermostat on a permanent live, fit a digital volt-free room stat. Each job proven at the end; the digital stat job with its regulations point.
Comes after Testing.
In this unit
Job: replace a faulty 2-port valve
Prove with the meter that a heating valve's motor has failed. Then isolate and prove dead, change the valve, test its earth and prove the repair.
Job: fit a frost thermostat
A house left empty in winter needs frost protection. Isolate and prove dead, fit a frost thermostat (stat) on a PERMANENT LIVE with its call on the heating valve's block, and prove it works with the programmer off.
Job: fit a digital room thermostat
Swap the old room thermostat (stat) for a battery digital stat with a volt-free contact. Isolate and prove dead, wire the demand to its common and its call out, with no neutral, and prove it.

In the simulator, you practise how to
- Prove a failed valve motor with the meter, change the valve and prove the job
- Fit a frost thermostat on a permanent live and prove it fires the boiler with the programmer off
- Replace a mains stat with a volt-free digital stat: the demand on its common, the call out, no neutral
Checks and credit
- A timed check at the end of the unit, its questions drawn at random. The score goes on your record.
Certificates of completion and credentials are DrawWarm’s own. They record practice and tests in the simulator. They are not a formal (regulated) qualification, and they do not show that anyone is competent to work on a heating system.
